Technical Questions
Can you tell me when I
should index folders and when websites?
Use "Index Folder" when:
1. You just want to index text files such as your WORD, PDF files.
2. You have a copy of the files of the website on your hard disk.
It's faster than index website on the Internet.
Use "Index Website" when:
1. You don't have the files of the website to be indexed on your
own computer.
2. The website to be indexed is a dynamical site, it's contents is
generated by script such as ASP, PHP etc. You can input such as "http://www.mysite.com"
or "http://localhost/mysite" to index. The latter will be faster if
available.
When should I use relative
links and when absolute links?
If you want to publish the search engine on CD-ROM, you must use
relative links, because the path of the CD-ROM is variable.
If you use relative links, to ensure the search result links working
correctly you must place the generated search engine files to the
right path. For example, you index "c:\mysitefiles\" and
make search files for it, you must put the generated search files
to "c:\mysitefiles\", and if index a website such as you
index "http://www.site.com", you must put the file to
the server and under the root path of "http://www.site.com". If you use absolute links, you
can put the generated files anywhere.
How to use wildcard in
the exclude file, folder and URL list?
Select "Index" tab page. Then press "Add
Files" or "Add folder" or "Add URL" button to add items to the exclude file
list. Then you can select a item in the list and press "Edit" button or double
click the item on the list to modify it to wildcard name. Use '*' as wildcard,
fox example "c:\html\pro*.htm", "c:\htm*\",
"http://www.your.com/html/pro*.htm", "http://www.your.com/htm*/" etc.
How to use CSS to
control the output of the search results?
Select "Output" tab page. Then select the components of
search results such as "result title", "result text" in the list, and then
select "No format applied or use stylesheet" on the right of the list. Then the
search result will keep the default settings of your search page. If you want to
specify a class to a component of search result such as "result text", you need
to check the box with text "Specify stylesheet class" and input the class name
into the edit box on the right. And you need to write a ".css" file and add code
<LINK href="filename.css" rel=stylesheet type=text/css>
into the <HEAD> section of the search page, or you can do it in other
ways.
